Our "flight" unit is a hit! We've learned about the forces acting against a plane: gravity, thrust, lift and drag. We've learned about Bernoulli's principal. We've learned a bit about helicopters, torque and gyroscopic presession.
The students took all of these principals and put them into practice in our paper airplane and rotor contests. Students competed for distance, loft and accuracy. This year's winners are Marina (for loft-4 seconds), Glenn (for accuracy) and Stacey (for distance-566inches).
In small groups, the students created a simple flying machine. The only materials they could use were: straws, paperclip, two pieces of paper, masking tape and a playing card. They competed for distance, loft and accuracy. Dallas and Jewel were the winners for accuracy. Jacob, Sam and Sierra won the distance challenge. And Haley's and Gareth's plane was aloft for 4 seconds.
More fun to come with bottle rockets and a super field trip to the flight museum.
