The latest from Ms. Chiu's class

The past two weeks have been a whirlwind!  The Fall season appears to be settling in and classroom routines have become second nature.

Ms. Chiu’s detectives are having a wonderful time collaborating in the many activities and problem solving that comprise each day.  Students are engaged in a “warm up” each morning, determining the elements of a problem and developing processes for solving these enjoyable brainteasers.

Students have also been researching and learning about geology, the rock cycle, paleontology, and applying problem solving strategies to better understand Columbia Gorge geologic history.

Students have also been engaged in reading and writing poetry!  Students use the writing process by developing Seed Ideas and creating a draft to work from.  They are beginning to appreciate the process of revising and editing the MANY times it takes to create a final product.  To be sure, their final products are GREAT!  Below are just a couple of the many outstanding examples students have created.  More poems are posted on the board outside Ms. Chiu’s room.

Lava

Audrey

I go up and up and up

faster and faster!

And hotter and hotter

and up and up!

And then,

I bubble and blast and splatter!

I rumble, and tumble, and erupt with fear!

That’s what I do!

Hawaii

Charlie

 Burning, flowing, melting

Hardening, cooling, forming

Layers on layers over years

Ever expanding Hawaii

Students have paired up with buddies from Ms. Tucker’s class.  After two sessions, this activity has become a class hit and highlight of each week.  Students certainly enjoy reading to one another.
